The competition is open to planners, architects, designers, artists and individuals working in teams or alone. No professional qualifications are required.

Competition Requirements

By registering and paying the non-refundable competition fee of $75.00 and a late registration fee of $100, the Participant and/or team of Participants agrees to the following regulations:



All communication regarding the competition should be directed to monument@storefrontrichmond.org and submission questions can be directed to support@submittable.com. All information submitted by participants must be in English. Competition participants and/or their representatives shall under no circumstances contact jury members. Participants who attempt to contact jury members shall be disqualified.


Submission Rights

Each Participant grants to Storefront for Community Design and others acting on behalf of Monument Avenue: General Demotion/General Devotion, a perpetual royalty-free, non-exclusive worldwide license to use, copy for use, and display publicly all parts of the Submission. This license includes posting or linking to the Submission on the official Monument Avenue: General Demotion/General Devotion website and making it available for use by the public. Participants retain the right to simultaneously use their Submission for all other purposes, including but not limited to, inclusion of the Submission in sample work portfolios. The author of any design shall retain the copyright of their work; no alterations may be made without their formal consent.



Except where prohibited, participation in Monument Avenue: General Demotion/General Devotion constitutes the Participant’s consent to Monument Avenue: General Demotion/General Devotion and its agents’ use of Participant’s name, likeness, professional office, institution, opinions, and/or hometown and state for promotional purposes in any media, worldwide, without further payment or consideration.

Submissions will be archived on the Monument Avenue: General Demotion/General Devotion competition website and at VCU’s Cabell Library and the Valentine thereafter. Each Participant grants Monument Avenue: General Demotion/General Devotion rights to use their Submission in the culminating exhibition and the Valentine.


Original Work

Participant warrants that he/she/they is/are the sole author and owner of the Submission, and that the Submission is wholly original with the Participant, and that it does not infringe any copyright or any other rights of any third party of which Participant is aware.



Monument Avenue: General Demotion/General Devotion reserves the right to change the schedule or issue amendments to the contest rules at any time. Monument Avenue: General Demotion/General Devotion also reserves the right to cancel or reissue the contest brief.

    PDF file not exceeding 40MB
    300dpi resolution
  • Project Name
    may be included on PDF panel if non-identifying
  • Team Name
    may be included on PDF panel if non-identifying
  • Project Description (300 words),
    may be included in the panel, but also must be submitted as text via Submittable form

The name of the team or identifying information should not occur anywhere on the panel. This is an anonymous competition. All entries with identifying information will not be considered.
